Preliminary results: pollen protein and plant flowering times

Preliminary results from ongoing research into the protein values of pollen in selected plant species are now available.  Levels ranged from 14% to 35% and are categorized as high, medium or low protein on the plant species list.  Protein is needed for the bee brood, for adult development and to prepare for winter.

Also available is a new list of plant flowering times. This list is expanded beyond the 2009 Bee Plant Guides but is not exhaustive and will be extended as more flowering time data is obtained.  It includes all plants for which we have information for natives and exotics, herbs, shrubs and trees.  This list can be used to help select plants that will flower during the critical seasons when bees are short of food -- the Spring-build up (August to October) and Winter preparation (March to May).
